The Benefits of Having a Hard Drive for Storage and Backup
Understand where hard drives still provide value for capacity, archives, local backups and NAS systems—and why one drive is never a complete backup plan.
Hard drives still matter because they provide large storage capacity at a practical cost. They are useful for photo and video libraries, project archives, CCTV retention, local backups and multi-bay NAS systems even when an SSD remains the better boot drive.
The main benefits of a hard drive
- High capacity: useful for large media libraries and long retention periods
- Lower cost per terabyte: often more economical than SSD storage at larger capacities
- Simple local ownership: files can remain available without depending on an internet connection
- Good archive role: suitable for data that is important but not opened constantly
- NAS flexibility: multiple drives can support shared storage, redundancy and expansion
HDD vs SSD
An SSD is faster, quieter and more resistant to movement, so it is usually the right system drive for a laptop or desktop. An HDD is attractive when capacity and price per terabyte matter more than speed. Many good setups use both: SSD for applications and active work, HDD or NAS for bulk storage and backup.
One hard drive is not a backup strategy
A drive can fail, be stolen, be encrypted by ransomware or be damaged with the computer. CISA's data backup guidance describes the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies, on two types of media, with one copy off site. Test that important files can actually be restored.
Direct-attached drive or NAS?
Choose a USB hard drive for one computer and simple scheduled backups. Choose a NAS when several people or devices need shared access, central permissions, automated backup targets or room for multiple drives. RAID can improve availability after a drive failure, but it does not replace a separate backup.
Current NAS options with visible prices
NAS enclosures normally require compatible drives to be purchased separately. Check the manufacturer compatibility list and the exact bay requirements.
