NAS Storage for Small Businesses in the UAE: Synology and QNAP Guide

A network-attached storage (NAS) device gives your team a central place for files, automatic backups of laptops and servers, and even camera recordings — without monthly cloud fees for every terabyte.

How many bays?

• 2-bay (for example Synology DS223j): small offices, simple mirrored storage
• 4-bay (DS425+, DS925+, QNAP TS-433/TS-464 class): the sweet spot for most SMBs
• 8 bays and rack models (DS1825+, RackStation, QNAP TS-873A): growing teams, virtualisation and large archives

RAID protects against drive failure — it is not a backup

RAID 1, 5 or 6 keeps data available if a drive fails. You still need a separate backup — to another NAS, external drives or the cloud — to protect against deletion, ransomware or theft. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two media, one off-site.

Choose the right drives

Use NAS-rated hard drives designed for 24/7 operation, and consider SSD cache for faster access to busy files.

Networking

Multiple 1GbE ports are enough for small teams; 2.5GbE or 10GbE makes a big difference for video editing or large CAD files. Check that your switch supports the speed too.

Protect it with a UPS

Connect the NAS to a UPS so it shuts down cleanly during power cuts.

What a NAS can do

• Shared folders with permissions per user
• Laptop and server backup
• Version history to recover overwritten files
• Surveillance recording
• Remote access for staff

FAQ

Are drives included? Most NAS units are sold diskless; we can quote drives with the unit.

Is a NAS better than cloud storage? Many businesses use both: a NAS for fast local access and backups, plus cloud for an off-site copy.
