Buy a Laptop in the UAE or Back Home in the Philippines? A Practical Guide
Should you buy a laptop in the UAE or back home in the Philippines? 5% vs 12% VAT, carrying it home, balikbayan boxes, warranty, keyboards and plugs.

Many Filipinos working in the UAE ask whether to buy a laptop here or wait until they are home. For most people, buying in the UAE is the better deal, mainly because of tax, and carrying it home is usually straightforward. Here is the full picture.

Tax: 5% vs 12%
- UAE VAT: 5%.
- Philippines VAT: 12%.
For the same price before tax, a laptop costs about 6–7% more in the Philippines because of VAT alone (1.12 ÷ 1.05 ≈ 1.067). Exchange rates and retailer pricing move, so compare the actual prices on the day.
Carrying it home
- In your hand luggage: a laptop for personal use is normally treated as a personal belonging. Keep the invoice with you.
- In a balikbayan box: OFWs can send balikbayan boxes with duty and tax exemptions, subject to limits on value and frequency. Check the current Bureau of Customs rules before you pack electronics.
- Several new units for resale are treated differently from personal items and may attract duty.
Warranty
Many brands' laptop warranties are regional. A laptop bought in the UAE may need to be serviced in the UAE, or under the brand's international warranty if it has one. Ask before you buy whether the model has international warranty, and keep the invoice.
Plugs and power
Laptop chargers work on 100–240V, so voltage is fine in both countries. The plug is different: the UAE uses the three-pin Type G plug, while the Philippines mostly uses Type A and C two-pin plugs. Bring a simple plug adapter or a spare cable.
Keyboard
UAE laptops are often sold with English/Arabic keyboards, and English-only versions are also available. Product pages state the layout, so pick English-only if you prefer.
