Server Hardware Explained: CPU, RAM, RAID and More for UAE Buyers
A plain-English breakdown of server components — processors, ECC memory, RAID storage, redundant power and out-of-band management — so UAE buyers can spec with confidence.
Understanding What Goes Into a Server
Servers look like beefy PCs, but the components are engineered for 24/7 reliability. Here's what each part does and why it matters when buying in the UAE.
Processors (CPU)
Servers use enterprise CPUs — Intel Xeon Scalable or AMD EPYC. Key considerations:
- Core count — more cores for virtualisation and parallel workloads
- Clock speed — higher for latency-sensitive apps
- Sockets — single for smaller loads, dual to double capacity
Memory (RAM)
Servers use ECC (Error-Correcting Code) memory that detects and fixes bit errors — essential for stability. Registered (RDIMM) memory allows very large capacities. Entry servers start around 32–64GB; virtualisation hosts run 256GB and beyond.
Storage and RAID
RAID combines drives for performance and redundancy:
- RAID 1 — mirroring, simple redundancy
- RAID 5/6 — striping with parity, good capacity + resilience
- RAID 10 — striping + mirroring, best performance with redundancy
- NVMe SSD — fastest, for databases
- SATA/SAS SSD — balanced
- SAS/SATA HDD — high capacity, lower cost
Redundant Power Supplies
Enterprise servers ship with dual hot-swap PSUs so one can fail (or one power feed can drop) without downtime — critical in any UAE data centre.
Out-of-Band Management
- Lenovo XClarity Controller (XCC)
- Dell iDRAC
- HPE iLO
Hot-Swap Everything
Drives, PSUs and fans that swap without shutting down keep uptime high.
