Who is it for?

• Small offices that want central file sharing, user permissions and version history.
• Backup targets for PCs, servers and Microsoft 365 using Synology's backup software.
• Businesses with a network rack that want storage alongside their switches and firewall instead of a desktop NAS on a shelf.

ECC memory is a good fit for business data: it detects and corrects memory errors that could otherwise corrupt files.

Drive compatibility: read this before buying drives

Synology's specification for the RS826+ states that compatible drives are mandatory and refers buyers to its compatibility list. Validated drive families include Synology's HAT3300 Plus and HAT5300 Enterprise series hard drives and SAT5200 Enterprise SSDs. Rules for third-party drives differ between Synology product lines, so check the Synology compatibility list for the RS826+ before you buy.

The RKS-02 rail kit

The RS826+ does not include rails. The Synology RKS-02 sliding rail kit mounts it in a standard 4-post 19" rack:

• Sliding rails, so you can pull the NAS out for service.
• Fits rack depths from 610 mm to 890 mm.
• Works with square holes (at least 9.5 mm) and round holes (at least 7.1 mm).

Upgrades worth planning

• Memory: 4GB is fine for file sharing and backups. Add memory for heavier workloads, many users or large volumes; Synology notes that volumes over 108TB need at least 32GB.
• 10GbE networking: the PCIe slot accepts a 10GbE card for faster transfers to a 10GbE switch, for example the Synology E10G17-F2 dual SFP+ (price on request). Confirm card compatibility for the RS826+ on Synology's list.
• Expansion: add an RX426 unit to grow to 8 bays.

Things to plan for in the UAE

1. Cooling. The RS826+ is rated to 35°C, so keep the rack in an air-conditioned room. Many UAE server cupboards run hotter than that without dedicated cooling.
2. Power. It has a single power supply. Protect it with a UPS and enable safe shutdown so a power cut does not corrupt data.
